Tragedy in Ibadan: Father of WASSCE Candidate Killed by Stray Bullet Was Evading Arrest – Police

By News24Hours | Ibadan, Nigeria | May 15, 2025

The Oyo State Police Command has issued a statement following the tragic death of a 17-year-old WASSCE candidate in Ibadan, clarifying that the victim was not the intended target of the shooting that claimed her life.

According to the police, the teenager was killed by a stray bullet during an operation to arrest her father, who was allegedly attempting to evade arrest at the time.

🕊️ A Promising Life Cut Short

The young girl, whose name has not yet been officially released, was preparing to write her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when she was fatally shot. The incident occurred during a police operation in the Olodo area of Ibadan on Wednesday.

Witnesses say the girl was at home when she was hit by the bullet, sparking outrage and grief in the community.

🛑 Police Justification

In a statement released on Thursday, Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Osifeso said:

“The father of the deceased was a suspect in an ongoing investigation and was resisting lawful arrest when the unfortunate incident occurred. During the attempt to restrain him, a shot was discharged which sadly struck the young girl.”

The police have assured the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that “necessary disciplinary procedures” will follow if any officer is found guilty of misconduct.

⚖️ Public Outcry and Demand for Justice

The incident has ignited fury among residents and human rights activists, with many calling for an independent inquiry into the use of lethal force during police operations in civilian areas.

A local rights group, Justice Front Nigeria, issued a statement demanding immediate suspension of the officers involved and compensation for the bereaved family.

“It is unacceptable that a child preparing for a national exam is gunned down in her own home. This is a gross failure of public safety,” the group said.

🕯️ Community in Mourning

Students, teachers, and residents held a candlelight vigil in honor of the deceased Thursday evening. Emotional scenes played out as classmates wept openly, lamenting a life full of promise taken too soon.

🚨 What Next?

While the police investigation is said to be ongoing, pressure is mounting on the Oyo State Government to take firm action and ensure accountability in the tragic loss of the teenager’s life.
