President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria following his official visit to Rome, Italy, where he attended the high-profile inauguration of Pope Francis’ newly designated Cardinals at the Vatican City.

The President arrived in Abuja on Thursday afternoon, where he was received by top government officials and members of his security detail at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

🌍 Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

Tinubu’s attendance at the papal event was part of broader diplomatic engagements aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s ties with the Vatican and the global Catholic community.

Sources within the presidency confirmed that President Tinubu held bilateral discussions with other world leaders and Vatican officials on matters relating to religious harmony, global peace, and economic cooperation.

🕊️ A Symbolic Presence

The inauguration ceremony, held at St. Peter’s Basilica, was attended by heads of state, religious leaders, and dignitaries from around the world. President Tinubu’s presence is viewed as a symbolic gesture of Nigeria’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and international diplomacy.

🇳🇬 Back to National Duties

With his return, President Tinubu is expected to immediately resume official duties. High on his agenda are meetings with economic advisers on foreign direct investment, as well as updates on security operations in several flashpoint areas across the country.

🗣️ Public Reactions

The President’s Rome trip drew mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians applauding the gesture towards global religious unity, while others questioned the timing and domestic priorities.

A presidency official, however, stated that “Nigeria must remain active on the international stage while tackling issues at home.”
