Ex-Rangers FC spokesman Chidi Okolo pays tribute to Christian Chukwu

Enugu, Nigeria — Renowned football analyst and former spokesperson of Rangers International FC, Chief Chidi Okolo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles coach, Chairman Christian Chukwu, who died on Saturday at his residence in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, after a brief illness.

Describing the news as devastating and deeply personal, Okolo hailed Chukwu as one of the greatest players in the history of Nigerian football, and a legend whose contributions spanned generations.

“Nigeria and indeed the entire African continent has lost a football legend—one who took the world by storm with his exceptional performance during the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations,” Okolo said in his tribute. “Chairman Chukwu was not only a pillar for the national team but also a driving force behind Rangers International FC’s historic 1977 Africa Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.”

Chief Okolo went on to highlight Chukwu’s formidable achievements as a coach, recalling his role in leading the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations, and his critical involvement as assistant coach during Nigeria’s victory at the inaugural FIFA U-17 World Cup.

“His contributions to Nigerian football, both as a player and coach, are immeasurable. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Okolo stated.

Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman,” remains a towering figure in African football history, admired for his leadership, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the sport.
